- You must be between the ages of 18 and 26 if you are a son or daughter and want to obtain benefits for going to school. Start before the age of eighteen and continue after the age of 26 are possible under some circumstances. This advantage is not restricted by marriage. This benefit might not be available to you while you are on active service in the military.
- You are qualified to pursue training if you received an honorable discharge from the armed forces. By the amount of months and days equivalent to the time you were in active service, VA may prolong your eligibility term. Except in rare circumstances, this extension usually expires after your 31st birthday.
- Spouse benefits terminate ten years from the date of the veteran’s death or the VA determines your eligibility. Spouses are entitled for benefits for 20 years after the rating’s effective date if the veteran was classified as chronically and completely handicapped by the VA and the rating took effect three years after the veteran’s discharge. With effect from October 2008, any training completed before that date will not be eligible for payments. Benefits terminate 20 years from the date of death for surviving spouses spouses of military personnel who died while on active duty.
