Digital payments will soon make your shopping experience much more personal with the recent partnership between CardSpring, a new payments infrastructure startup, and VeriFone, the global leader in secure electronic payment solutions.

Cardspring is a digital platform that allows businesses to use its customers’ pre-existing credit and debit cards as digital loyalty cards, turning transactions into relationships.

By combining CardSpring’s web service application programming interface (API) with VeriFone’s open interface, retailers and third-party developers are now able to create card-linked services for any POS (point-of-sale) system - without altering the store’s existing infrastructure or the customer’s shopping experience.

Through these card-linked applications, customers will be able to receive coupons, discounts, gift cards, loyalty programs, and more right at the checkout. In other words - CardSpring will digitally and automatically add discounts to a customer’s bill when paid with a credit or debit card that is registered with the store through a website or online application.

Eckart Walther, CardSpring’s CEO said, “Through this partnership, retailers and third-party developers will be able to leverage VeriFone’s industry-leading open payment platform to create a new generation of applications that bring the power and accountability of digital commerce tools to hundreds of millions of retail shoppers.”

According to TechCrunch, CardSpring has about 400 developers using its APIs and takes “an undisclosed cut on each transaction, depending on the size of the partner.” Walther comments, “Some are flat and some are per transaction. There might even be a free version at some point in time.”

CardSpring is currently in a closed beta but you can request an invitation through their beta registration form.
