Food Lion’s New Mobile App Makes Shopping Easier

Not familiar with Food Lion? That’s okay; there are plenty who are. It’s a regional grocery chain that focuses on the American Southeast, with over 1,100 stores in 10 states. It’s just brought out a new mobile app that should make shopping at a Food Lion location that much easier, thanks to the incorporation of coupons and other perks therein.

The new app connects users to its digital MVP rewards card, as well as digital weekly ads, to offer up a variety of discounts. Already users have access to over $250 in Load to Card Coupons, as they’re known, that can be found in the mobile app. That makes putting these cost-saving propositions to work just a little easier than it once was, and should bring in a few more budget-conscious users.

It’s not just the cost savings that should bring the customers, though, as it also boasts the ability to make and maintain shopping lists as well as a recipe finder. The app is also compatible with the MVP Cards Food Lion already uses, so any crossover should be seamless. It even keeps track of savings to date, which should prove welcome for longer-term users wanting to justify that behavior.

Food Lion’s vice president of marketing Deborah Sabo commented “…This convenient tool is packed with features to make customers’ lives easier, including the ability to tell a shopper the exact aisle where products on their shopping list are located.”

It’s a good start, though one wonders why Food Lion didn’t take the extra step and open up the full range of mobile payments options here. We have the capability to let shoppers scan their own items in carts now and pay for these all from a smartphone, so why isn’t it being put to use? Still, what’s presented here is sound enough and should be well-received. It’s just a mite surprising that more companies aren’t putting to use the technology that’s available. Unless, of course, they’re actively working against such a move to keep their cashiers employed.

In the end, Food Lion’s new mobile app is sound enough and should be well-received. Maybe it doesn’t go as far as it could, but sometimes it’s better to show a bit of restraint.
