Staples’ Mobile Site Now Takes Apple Pay

With Apple Pay’s second birthday still fresh in plenty of users’ minds, the word about a new merchant will likely be welcome. Even better, that new merchant is a major one in its own right, as office supply upstart Staples steps in to add Apple Pay functionality to its mobile site.

This comes hot on the heels of several recent developments, including the new addition of Apple Pay to several banks and credit unions’ operations, as well as several new countries which stepped in. Additionally, Apple Pay added its own services to Safari browser payments last month, which opens up the pool of users somewhat by letting any Mac device made after 2012 that runs macOS Sierra or better, as long as they also have an iPhone 6 or later or Apple Watch to confirm the payment, reports note.

Meanwhile, Staples’ executive vice president of global e-commerce Faisal Masud commented “Staples’ customers demand seamless check-out when making purchases on the go, so they can get back to running their business. Apple Pay on Staples’ mobile web lets customers securely shop on their phone without having to open an app. We’ve been very pleased with the response to Apple Pay in our iPhone app and look forward to similar success with this new, seamless option on mobile web.”

Anything Apple Pay can do to expand its reach is likely going to be welcome. It’s perhaps one of the biggest problems seen so far with Apple Pay; it’s an easy to use system, and its user loyalty with Apple users is not only a substantial base, but the kind of thing the operation will need long-term to stay afloat. The problem is that Apple Pay can only be used in so many places. If Apple Pay users don’t go to these places, that’s a cut-off opportunity for Apple, and an opportunity for someone else to step in. We’ve already seen it with those Katz’s Deli ads with Hannibal Buress for Samsung Pay.

However, it’s clear that Apple’s working to expand its range, and surely Apple users will be forgiving if the rollout is still a bit slower than would be desired.
