MCI.EuroVentures to Take Over Dotpay Owner

MCI.EuroVentures fund is set to acquire Mobiltek, which owns Dotpay, a major player in electronic payments in Poland.

The move is in line with the fund’s strategy to bolster its exposure to services in the rapidly growing financial technologies sector.

Dotpay owns more than 12 percent share in ‘Pay-by-link,’ a leading payment form in the country’s e-commerce, which accounts for more than a third of all online payments.

A licensed national payment institution since 2013, Dotpay also provides payments via mobile and debit cards.

In collaboration with Polish telecom operators, Mobiltek offers premium text messages and direct carrier billing (DCB) to both local and international clients. It also offers specialist IT services for the financial sector.

Łukasz Wierdak, MCI Investment Director, commented, “The potential of the Polish market of online payments results from its direct link with the fast-developing e-commerce market, whose value goes up by two digits every year. According to experts this tendency will continue in the coming years. What is more, in Poland, in contrast to the West, cash on delivery remains the dominant form of payment for online shopping. However, the efficiency, convenience and safety of online payments are making them more and more popular while the share of cash on delivery in all forms of payment should see a steady decrease.”

According to research firm PMR, cash on delivery is the most popular methods of online payments in Poland at 42 percent, a percentage that slumps by 2 to 4 percent every year. Instant transfers including ‘Pay-by-link’ follow at 37 percent.

The Polish e-commerce market is expected to reach PLN 31.5 billion in 2015, up from the previous year’s PLN 27 billion. This figure will likely grow to PLN 50 billion in 2019.
