A non-familiar face is jumping into the online payment game, joining the likes of PayPal, Apple and Samsung.

US retail giant Walmart is launching its own mobile payment system that it hopes to integrate with its massive retail service.

The move by Walmart mirrors many others within the payment industry, although it is bit out of the ordinary considering Walmart is not a native financial or technology company.

Walmart’s online payment system, called Walmart Pay, is an extension of its customer loyalty program, which has been in operation for some years now. The new online payment system is also a distinct separation from its previous Merchant Customer Exchange, a program that ran into numerous issues and complication.

One of the primary benefits of a Walmart controlled mobile payment system is the combination of both retail shopping and easily accessible and compatible payment options.

To some, the move by Walmart comes at no surprise. The advent of modern computing and internet has opened the floodgates of technological innovation. It has also allowed traditionally non-technology companies to move into the tech sector with ease.

Walmart now joins the likes of Apple, Google and Samsung as major international companies rolling out their own payment systems for consumers to enjoy.
