Tiny Spanish-speaking mascots aside, for those who love a little Taco Bell, there’s a great new reason to pay attention to the company’s website.

The company has had plenty of success with mobile in recent days, and it’s capitalizing on that success with some new changes to its site.

Dubbed ta.co, the site is being called Taco Bell’s “new virtual flagship restaurant” by its CEO, Brian Niccol. Niccol further explained how that combination of mobile payment options and native ordering systems is going to advance the restaurant chain forward.

The app alone has proven quite a success for Taco Bell, with over 3.7 million downloads in play, and an average customer spend up fully 20 percent for app users. That’s the kind of thing that a restaurant would die to see, so when Taco Bell saw it, it took steps to do more of the successful thing, as should be expected.

Ta.co, as a result, not only offers faster order and payments processes, but also search and nutrition information available not only to the mobile users, but also to the desktop users. Users will also be able to customize orders, so for those who enjoy their Double XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito with chicken, but without guacamole as I do, you’ll be in good hands here.

Niccol offered up some comment to Entrepreneur magazine about the redesign, noting that customers want “ease of access”, and that that ease of access should be “on their terms.” Niccol further noted that customers wanted to be “in control of both their order and how they customize their food experience.”

Indeed, it’s a great idea, and one that’s already worked well for Taco Bell in the past. Personally, I’ve always been a little disconcerted that the company had an app for this, but didn’t have any thing for the desktop user. Being one who uses a lot of word processing apps, I find the “Grandpa Box”, as a Dilbert strip once famously called the desktop / laptop line, the best platform from which to engage for writing articles like the one you’re reading right now. Offering that mobile experience on my Grandpa Box is a welcome help; working out of the house now means I can order dinner right from my favorite coffee shop and pick it up on the way home, a sweet slice of convenience. People like convenience, and if Taco Bell can offer it, so much the better.

With many restaurants turning to mobile apps for everything from pre-ordering meals to paying for said meals, Taco Bell is actually ahead of the curve here. While Taco Bell may not ultimately win the Franchise Wars as “Demolition Man” once so famously predicted, it’s certainly making a move on being top of the food chain.
