SIX & Swisscom Partner with Banks For National Mobile Payments Service

SIX, a Swiss financial infrastructure operator, and Swisscom, a Swiss telecommunications provider, have partnered with a number of Swiss banks to establish a nationwide mobile payments service. This new development will enable consumers to make in-store mobile payments at retail location using either NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), or a combination of both.

“We believe in the Swiss financial centre and want to create a Swiss solution that can act as a counterweight to international players,” commented Swisscom CEO Urs Shaeppi.

The service will be based on a mobile app, Paymit, that was launched by SIX in partnership with UBS and Zurcher Kantonalbank in May 2015 as a P2P transfer service that allows users to send and receive funds using store credit stored in a Paymit account.

The in-store payments will be available in early 2016 with value-added services like loyalty and offers expected later.

“Digitisation opens up numerous opportunities to improve the customers’ shopping experience, and thanks to Paymit it will be even easier for businesses to take advantage of these new possibilities.”
