Samsung Launches New Payments System for Smart TVs

August 6, 2015         By: Michael Cheng

Samsung Pay could be making its way to your television very soon.

The tech company announced a new service that allows individuals to make purchases on selected 2014 and 2015 television models. Users can buy movies, apps and games, such as Gamefly Streaming, Buddy & Me, and Deer Hunter.

Samsung confirmed that the platform was made from scratch, specifically for its smart television units. The service supports debit and credit cards, as well as a range of online and mobile payment methods.

To get started, individuals will have to register by keying in their billing details. Those with a Samsung mobile device can bypass the sign up process and transfer their account information directly into the system.

Completing a transaction is very similar to paying for an item online through a digital shopping cart. Simply choose the item or product, select ‘Pay Now’ and enter the personalized PIN. The system will then automatically initiate the payment with the preferred method.

According to the official Samsung blog post, the first-of-its-kind payments platform is highly secure:

The Samsung Smart TV payment service also features enhanced security. Users can rest assured that their personal payment information is safe and secure. Samsung teamed up with PayPal to offer a fast and safe payment process, and PayPal users can expect the same level of sophistication when it comes to keeping their financial information secure as they do on a PC or mobile device.

Samsung Pay for TVs will initially roll out in 32 countries. Payment methods and features will be limited, depending on the model and location of the user.

Analysts say that the company’s interest in adding value to its smart television line is related to the projected increase in demand for ultra high-definition and large-screen TVs.
