Accomplished Comedian Louis C.K. Accepts Bitcoin Payments

August 11, 2024         By: Michael Cheng

Louis C.K., a five-time Emmy award winner and entrepreneur, has become the first comedian to accept Bitcoin.

With help from BitPay, a leading bitcoin payments processor, fans can now purchase shows, recordings and other products on the official website using the digital currency.

“We have the price set to $5, but you can lower it to $1 or raise it to $85. That’s the maximum, because beyond that, I don’t want your crazy money,” mentioned C.K. on his website.

To make a purchase using Bitcoin, customers are required to initiate the option by entering their personal email address twice. After committing to a specific amount (based on the unique pricing model), users will be provided with a BitPay link and a QR code for mobile bitcoin wallets. Following through with one of the two mediums is the final step of the transaction.

C.K. clarified that his decision to accept the widely recognized digital currency was influenced by the entertainment industry. Many see the comedian’s move as a positive step in mainstream bitcoin adoption.

“I Just spent $40 in bitcoin and just got all my Louis C.K. to add to my library. No more falling asleep to YouTube videos. Super great move, Louis,” said a Reddit user.

The successful artist has been known to push the boundaries of technology in the past. At one point, C.K. supported his own specials and offered them on his website on a shareable, DRM-free format.

“Look, I don’t really get the whole ‘torrent’ thing. I don’t know enough about it to judge either way. But I’d just like you to consider this: I made these files extremely easy to use against well-informed advice,” explained C.K.

Well-established comedians who followed the same product and marketing scheme include Aziz Ansari from Parks and Recreation.
