NFC Adoption Grows in UK With Cab:App Readers

Cabbies in the UK and Ireland are embracing a new mobile payment solution to make hailing taxis easier for customers.

The payment facilitator cab:app has developed a mobile app for taxi drivers that takes the best of Uber and puts it in conventional cabs.

Like Uber, cab:app users can hail cabs with their smartphone, which pings cab:app and asks them to locate the closest available cab.

On the driver side, cab drivers have a dedicated app that will allow them to find customers. The app will not only allow drivers to accept mobile payments, but also to accept cards through a chip and pin reader and an NFC reader through payworks.

Unlike Uber, the cab:app solution is being welcomed with open arms by licensed taxi drivers.

Cab:app founder Peter Shive has told reporters that they are working with official taxi drivers, who drive the signature black Hackney carriage cars in London and across the British Isles.

“We are extremely excited to empower all Hackney Carriage and licensed cab drivers to accept card payments from their passengers. Payworks is the leading integrated POS platform in the market and the team has been a great partner along the way. We are very pleased to work with them,” Shive said in a statement.
