PayPal and Paydiant Collaboration Results In New Subway App

July 30, 2015 by

In the brief amount of time that has passed since Paydiant joined the PayPal family, a new app has been developed for Subway customers.

According to Chris Gardner, the co-founder of Paydiant—a PayPal Company, this outcome is only fitting considering the long lasting working relationship between Subway and Paydiant.

By leveraging their mobile wallet platform, Paydiant designed the new Subway App, which was officially released in early 2015. As a result of the acquision, PayPal will be integrated as an additional payment option in over 27,000 locations nationwide.

Due to their shared vision of granting merchants access to one of the leading mobile payment technologies in the world, Gardner suggests that this union was a no-brainer.

Subway guests will access the app by selecting the “PayPal” option, allowing them to utilize any smartphone to complete their transaction.

PayPal will also be made available as a payment choice for online order through order.subway.com. In addition, PayPal will be adding their “One Touch” feature to the checkout experience—a faster, quicker means of payment for online and mobile.

Payment Week caught up with Chris Gardner to get the scoop on the excitement surrounding their new journey with PayPal, and the new Subway App:

How vital was it to include PayPal into your plans pertaining to the Subway App?

PayPal provides convenience and security at checkout. Merchants such as Subway are focused on speeding customers through ordering and checkout. The addition of PayPal to the SUBWAY® App and order.subway.com later this year will help attract customers who already use PayPal both online and on their mobile devices. Guests – whether through the app or when ordering online – will soon have the added convenience to Order Ahead and checkout with PayPal, knowing that their payments are fast, safe and secure. Subway will now enjoy the advantage of having access to PayPal’s deep expertise in the mobile payments space, enormous customer base, best-in-class risk management, customer support, open payments architecture and global reach.

Is there a reason Subway was one of the first combined outcomes of the acquisition?

Completed just months after PayPal acquired Paydiant, the Subway collaboration reflects a joint commitment to providing customers with simple, secure and mobile payment options. Subway is the largest restaurant in the world in terms of restaurant locations with more than 27,000 in the U.S alone, making this a challenging yet rewarding rollout for all parties involved.

Did previous success with Subway lead you to this decision?

Paydiant provides the mobile wallet platform for some of the world’s most largest and beloved retailers and restaurants including Subway. Paydiant previously helped Subway build mobile payments, offers and loyalty programs into its mobile app with great success.

What kind of demand do you see for a seamless mobile payment platform from Subway customers?

The joint goal of the partnership is to make it as easy as possible for Subway guests to purchase their sandwiches with the ability to offer a great loyalty and reward experience, regardless of how they want to pay. We know that mobile will continue to be an important payment method for Subway guests moving forward, and we want the user experience to be as simple and as frictionless as possible. Paydiant has helped propel Subway into this world, and the PayPal integration will only further help achieve this goal.

What is your future plans in terms of making the new Subway app more appealing to the consumer?

We are constantly evaluating the customer payment experience, and recognize the importance offering quick and easy payment options that appeal to today’s mobile, tech-savvy customers. As part of the integration, we’re also enabling PayPal’s One Touch™ technology – the faster, safer way to pay – for eligible guests checking out online and on mobile later this year. With One Touch, guests that have opted-in can pay in a single touch without having to re-enter their PayPal usernames or passwords. We look forward to further developing our partnership and working together in other locations across the globe.
