Apple Pay Launches in UK

July 14, 2015         By: Mike Dautner

Today in the UK Apple launches its highly anticipated Apple Pay.

This news comes nearly nine months after the official launch in the United States, making this announcement a long time coming for avid UK Apple customers.

Users of Apple devices such as iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and Apple Watch will now have access to approximately 250,000 shops throughout the UK using the NFC-based Apple Pay.

Though it may take a few weeks for retailers to gain the necessary training to operate through Apple Pay, this is an exciting step towards innovative payment methods for the UK.

The major card networks utilizing Apple Pay in the UK currently include Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. Discover cardholders in the US get Apple Pay support this fall, but no word yet on plans for the UK.

Notable absences from this announcement are HSBC and Barclay’s. Both missed the timeline for today’s launch, but will have access to Apple Pay in the near future.

One thing is certain, Apple users in the UK have one more thing to be excited about today due to this major launch.
