These days frugality isn’t just a smart idea; for some, it’s a way of life, and that’s got people looking a little closer at Groupon.

A new addition to Apple Watch can be a big boon for both users and retailers alike, as a new Apple Watch app puts Groupon to work right on the spot.

Basically everything that made Groupon useful on other devices—particularly on the iPhone—has been moved to the Apple Watch, where deals will be just a flick of the wrist away.

Users will be able to receive notifications about deals near the current location—which is especially good if you’re in a place with a large concentration of merchants—as well as browse currently available deals in the region, and even make purchases through the smartwatch interface. But that’s not all; Groupon has some plans for current expansion, including the ability to view lifetime savings incurred as well as immediately-available unused vouchers. Alerts on vouchers about to expire are on hand, and information about redemption capabilities are also in play.

This is good news on all sides; while Groupon on a smartphone certainly went a long way toward making Groupon deals more immediately accessible, this measure will go even farther in making that happen.

With more and more people looking to make the jump from smartphones to wearable devices, putting the announcement that a Groupon deal is in the immediate area should be well-received by the user base.

Plus, retailers can take advantage of that immediacy to offer special deals on days when foot traffic is set to be unusually high. That gives retailers an advantage of being able to strike while the metaphorical iron is hot, and gives customers a reason to be on hand for retail deals.

Being available on Apple Watch gives even Apple an edge; how many users will crave the convenience of being able to not only schedule a Groupon deal but also pay for it from the same device, one that’s right on their wrist to begin with?

This is a development that could work out very well for all concerned, though it’s going to take some time to see just how the whole thing shakes out. Still, if everything goes just right this could well spark a bit of a retail renaissance as frugality drives users away from online shopping and toward deal-heavy brick-and-mortar retailers.
