Startups continue to appify everything, and now another startup is taking a crack at replacing the restaurant waiter with an app.
The startup in question is Gruberie, which has already pieced together the infrastructure, thanks to a Gimbal beacon, MasterCard, and cloud hosting from Atlantic.net.
Of course, Gruberie isn’t the first or the only startup looking to create an app that replaces waiters—we wrote about Full Society just last month. While Full Society is still in the pre-release development stage, Gruberie is already up and running—at one restaurant in New York.
The establishment in question is the Skylight Diner on 34th street in Manhattan. It has beacons installed that connect with Gruberie.
If you have some spare time next time you’re around the Empire State Building, you can pop down to the diner with the Gruberie app.
No word on exactly how seamless (ahem) the experience is, since Techcrunch reports that Skylight wasn’t all that keen on cooperating—apparently Manhattan diners are not as forward-thinking and revolutionary-minded as, say, Elon Musk or Jony Ives.
But with some arm-twisting, Gruberie has jackhammered the walls between us and a bright future and gotten a Gimbal beacon installed in the restaurant and connected to the cloud.
With this little device, the future is here.
No more flagging down waiters, figuring out if the server is really flirting with you or just wants a bigger tip, or waiting a whole five minutes for overworked minimum wage earners to come bring your bill.
With Gruberie, that’s all gone! Now just fill in your personal details, your credit card info, and then download the menu—then choose what you want, and your food will magically appear at your table within minutes (maybe an hour—Skylight gets busy). Presto-the awful hassle of interacting with another human is gone!
Thanks to Gruberie, the truly agoraphobic can enjoy a nice quiet meal in the most crowded spot in the United States. Ain’t the future grand?
