Retale Study: Millennials Demand Speed and Convenience at Checkout

A new study from Retale examines Millennial consumers and their sentiments towards shopping in brick and mortar stores.

More than 1,000 respondents gave their feedback on their checkout experience.

Of the Millennial respondents (aged 18-34), 91 percent have used self-checkout kiosks, an overwhelming majority.

While most said their choice to self-checkout was for convenience reasons (72 percent due to having a limited number of items and not wanting to wait in line), 20 percent of Millennials want the least amount of human interaction possible and don’t want to deal with cashiers.

Twenty percent of Millennials also said that they would like the option to pay with a mobile device, hinting at the growth of mobile payment adoption among the more tech-savvy population.

Taken together, these figures suggest that Millennials want more high-tech payment options and greater automation at the checkout process.

Millennials expect greater speed and convenience, and the shopping experience is no different. Retailers must understand these sentiments as this and future generations come into the buying fold.
