Dell announced it is now catering to digital currency payments from Canada and the UK.

According to Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell’s tweet, the company could be the largest merchant to accept bitcoin worldwide.

The tech company first opened its doors to the world of bitcoin last year. During the initial launch, the service was limited to US based customers. Microsoft quickly followed, adopting bitcoin as a payment option via BitPay in December 11, 2014.

Paul Walsh, CIO of Dell, said, “We’re hearing from our customers around the world that they want the option to use bitcoin when buying Dell products, so we are excited to deliver bitcoin as a payment method on Dell.com to our customers in Canada and the UK.”

Walsh mentioned that online purchases have increased substantially since the announcement. Dell’s largest bitcoin transaction to date was a $50,000 server from an unnamed buyer.

Dell’s strategic partnership with Coinbase, a leading digital wallet and merchant service, allows it to accept virtual money with minimal risks. During the checkout process, customers pay in bitcoin through Coinbase, where it is exchanged to fiat currency (in this case GBP or the Canadian dollar). The platform can also handle transactions from users without a Coinbase account.

“We will offer bitcoin as long as our customers demand it – it is one method of payment available to them to make purchasing products and solutions from Dell easier and meet them on their terms,” clarified Walsh.

For now, there are no ongoing promotions tied with the new alternative payment option. Walsh highlighted that future bitcoin campaigns would be posted on the official website.

Other companies that have recently expanded to cater to bitcoin users internationally include Overstock.com. Similar to Dell, digital currency payments from the website are also facilitated by Coinbase.
