Airbnb reportedly preparing to launch a prepaid MasterCard debit card as an “Experience Card.”
With the Airbnb Experience Card, Airbnb users would be able to spend up to $1,000 and Airbnb would later charge their default payment method once the trip is over.
Few blogs reported that they have spotted a web copy that advertises the Airbnb Experience Card. The copy says “The Experience card is a promotional prepaid card by Airbnb and carries $1000 USD for you to spend while you’re on your trip. When your trip is over, we will email you with a summary of your charges.
72 hours after you receive your summary, we will charge your default payment method associated with your Airbnb account.”
The web copy later disappeared, but a Google cached version seems to be still available. Reports so far confirmed that Airbnb is planning to launch the Experience Card as a trial in the New York City area, where the company generates a lot of revenue from outside visitors.
Travel advisors regularly suggest consumers to use prepaid debit cards during travel as it helps reduce the exposure to potential fraud while they are away from home. With the Airbnb branded prepaid MasterCard, consumers can spend the preloaded funds in any Point-of-Sales (POS) location where MasterCard is accepted. However, users will not be able to withdraw funds from MasterCard supported ATMs with this Experience Card.
Airbnb would also use the Experience Card as part of a broader loyalty program, where users will be able to earn 10% of the money they spend as a loyalty bonus. Later, they can use that credit on the Experience Card to make future bookings and pay for their stay on Airbnb.
Prior to the rumors of this Experience Card, Airbnb has not really addressed the need for a loyalty card and industry experts believe that this new program would help the company to retain customers and increase the possibility of repeat bookings.
