Messaging Apps: The Future of Money?
One messaging platform with over 600 million users may be making the move into mobile payments.
Viber recently filed a trademark application on October 6th with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the phrase “Sending Money Is As Easy As Saying Hello.”
Through the app from Viber, users have the ability to send free messages and make free calls to other Viber users.
Viber currently has approximately 606 million users around the globe, which is up from 460 million in November of 2014. Viber was acquired that year by Japanese online retailer Rakuten Inc., but ultimately operates on an independent basis.
The company was founded back in 2010 in Israel and is headquartered in Tel Aviv.
Right now the major players in mobile payments include Venmo and PayPal.
However, Viber has the advantage of a large customer base. The battle for the heart of the consumer regarding mobile payments may yet be a profitable business endeavor for businesses like Viber. This is excluding those moving money via credit card
The company also discussed how expanding payments internationally will necessitate complying with country-specific guidelines and regulations on how to deal with payment card and individual personal information.
