Adyen Reports Steady Growth in Mobile Web Payments

Despite the belief that mobile payments aren’t quite taking off in North America, new data from Adyen’s Global Mobile Payment Index shows a massive uptick in one major outlet for spending on smart devices: mobile web payments.

In April through June 2014, Adyen’s mobile web payments accounted for 22 percent of all global transactions, a 9 percent increase from last quarter.

In North America, Adyen saw a year-over-year increase of 48 percent in mobile web transactions.

This means that consumers are growing more comfortable with using their smartphones and tablets for making web purchases as opposed to using PCs and laptops.

Globally, Adyen saw a growth of 33 percent in mobile web transactions from June 2013.

For retailers, it means offering a robust and accessible mobile web platform to their customers is becoming increasingly critical.

Kamran Zaki, President of Adyen North America said that “Mobile as a sales channel cannot be ignored anymore. Every merchant selling on the web now needs to have a mobile payment strategy as well, including adapting their checkout process to the specifics of each mobile device.”

For the payments industry, processing and usability must be tailored for retailers who are becoming increasingly aware of the opportunities in mobile and tablet devices.
