Pioneering online floral retailer 1-800 Flowers announced that they will now begin accepting Bitcoin payments through affiliation with burgeoning Bitcoin payments operator, Coinbase.
1-800-Flowers is one of the largest e-tailers yet to begin working with the digital currency, which portends an even bigger slice of online payments soon to be captured as digital currency transactions.
Looking at the history of the company it was always an early adopter of new media technology, back to the origins of the moniker in the late 1980’s when 800 numbers were the new tool in connecting fast businesses.
1-800-Flowers is a mnemonic spelling of the firm’s 24/7 toll free calling line (1-800-356-9377). The floral franchise didn’t stop riding the wave of innovation in the beginning of the 90’s with the advent of the webpage, and 1-800-Flowers was a fast adopter of this amazing new technology.
Firm founder and CEO, Jim McCann carries the torch of the firm’s early days on the cutting edge of innovation and sharpens the vision with this statement, “As a customer-centric company, we are always looking for new ways to engage with our customers and enhance their shopping experience for all of their celebratory occasions. Bitcoin, together with our other payment options, offers our customers another highly convenient way to help them deliver smiles to the important people in their lives.”
Another online retailer Newegg.com also announced its foray into Bitcoin payments and devoted a page to describe what Bitcoin is and how to use it on their site What Is Bitcoin. This rash of announcements is significant in light of the volume and diversity of institutions taking notice of the new currency options.
Taking note of the speed and amplitude with which the wave of acceptance is spreading, it is clear that businesses are open to change and is quick to adapt to the consumer’s desires.
