SEQR Mobile Payment Readying U.S. Launch

December 4, 2024         By: Kevin Xu

SEQR, a mobile payment offering created by Seamless and originating from Sweden, is making major moves to gain traction among consumers around Europe and overseas.

SEQR, first launched in 2012, is a hybrid NFC/QR code payment app and digital wallet that also allows the storage of receipts and access to discounts and loyalty offers. Checking out involves tapping and paying with NFC, or scanning with QR codes, and entering a security PIN.

It’s a leading mobile payment provider in Sweden thanks to the promise of lower fees for retailers and loyalty incentives for consumers. SEQR has gained McDonald’s as well as other fast food and national retailers as clients. It’s these relationships that will allow SEQR to launch in Belgium, spring of next year with McDonald’s.

SEQR plans to enter the Americas, with the U.S. being a major point of focus. Branded mobile payment apps in the U.S., such as Starbucks and Subway’s offerings, are signs that mobile payments can be effective if there is a strong consumer base already in place.

Competition is notoriously fierce in the U.S. and mobile payments are shaping up to be an all-or-nothing proposition, with established offerings like Google Wallet, Isis, and PayPal the major players in a fight for an increasingly fragmented user base.

SEQR has brought on board Emilian Elefteratos, as General Manager, and Kenny Douglas as VP of Business and Partnership Development in preparations for a push in to the U.S. Both have extensive experience in the payments industry and business development.
